Tips for Developing Effecting Training Programs

An effective training program has to be designed with expertise, patience, and attention to detail. By understanding the nuances of a well-established training program, it’s easier to develop something that will deliver incredible results for your business.

Here are some of the key steps involved in setting up a new training program.

Seek Experienced and Qualified Trainers

The first thing to do is to look for recognised trainers that have been working in the industry for years. It’s worth hiring an exceptional trainer is to make sure the information is being passed on and absorbed exactly as intended. Even if the information is well-written, it is going to take time to learn, and that’s where a trainer comes in. He/she can break things down and highlight the core details that have to be understood and applied. This is essential to building a good training program.

Robust Course Material

One of the most important parts of a good training program is the course material. People will learn differently and not having the right type of information to put in front of them is a disaster waiting to happen. You want to be diligent and make sure the training program is set up with a clearly defined purpose and outcomes. A great training program (like one of our courses) is not going to occur overnight and it will take many revisions over time, but robust course material is an essential starting requirement. Your trainer should never be struggling to fill their sessions with content.

Well Planned Sessions

Once you have laid out all of the information that you are wanting to deliver, you then need to figure out how to deliver this in a logical order. Your course is going to be covering multiple competencies around the same topic and if this isn’t delivered appropriately, the students will struggle to digest the information. As I think back to my school days, I remember classes dragging on and seemingly covering a whole lot of information which did not seem relevant. The aim is to have the right amount of information delivered in a logical order which does not drag out over an unnecessary extended time frame.

Training is about understanding what information needs to be delivered and then delivering this is a timely fashion. Delaying things and/or extending them over time is never a good option nor should it be the approach that’s taken. Instead, the goal has to be to always aim for quick and concise sessions paired with practical application to cement the knowledge. This will ensure that your program consistently delivers on its desired training outcomes.

Accreditation & Compliance

When designing a nationally recognised course, there are detailed standards around the performance and knowledge which needs to be demonstrated on completion of the course along with framework around who is allowed to deliver this course. Before starting to design a course, you should have a comprehensive understanding of this framework and resources available to deliver the training. Designing and delivering nationally recognised training is no easy task which is why a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) must be involved.

If you are looking into designing and delivering training or are thinking about becoming a Registered Training Organisation, It is a good idea to first have a discussion with an RTO such as Warp Training Australia about an RTO partnering solution. In my experience, there is usually a lot more involved then first meets the eye and a simple discussion could save you a world of time, effort and pain.
