If you’re looking to start a career in traffic management in Western Australia, you’ll notice that Basic Worksite Traffic Management (BWTM) and Traffic Control (TC) are delivered together as a single training course.
While they are separate Main Roads WA accreditations, they form the foundation of working safely on a traffic management worksite. Because these roles are designed to work together in most cases, they are delivered together as the industry-standard entry course.
At Workmate Training Academy, students complete one three-and-a-half-day course and, upon successful completion, receive both BWTM and TC accreditations.
What You’ll Learn
During the BWTM and TC course, you’ll learn how to:
- install, maintain and remove temporary traffic management devices such as signs, cones, arrow boards, etc
- interpret and implement Traffic Management Plans and Traffic Guidance Schemes (TMPs and TGSs)
- safely control vehicle and pedestrian movements
- communicate effectively with work crews and other traffic controllers
- comply with Main Roads WA requirements and industry best practice
- maintain a safe worksite from set-up through to pack-down
Why Both Accreditations Matter
On a traffic management worksite, site set-up and traffic control aren’t independent tasks; they’re part of the same traffic management system.
The industry expects new traffic management workers to understand both aspects of the role. That’s why the standard training pathway in Western Australia includes both BWTM and Traffic Control accreditations, ensuring workers can contribute safely and effectively on-site from day one.
Are There Any Exceptions?
There are limited situations where a person may only require the BWTM accreditation, such as employees working for local governments, telecommunications providers or utility organisations who install temporary traffic management but don’t undertake traffic control.
These are exceptions rather than the norm. For most people entering the traffic management industry, completing the combined BWTM & TC course is the expected pathway.
