Basic Worksite Traffic Management & Traffic Control Refresher + Portable Traffic Control Devices Course
From March 1st, 2026, the Basic Worksite Traffic Management & Traffic Control Refresher course will include an half day under MRWA requirements to include Portable Traffic Control Device training with two new units of competency included.
Main Roads Western Australia stipulates that all traffic management accreditations are to be renewed every 3 years. This 1.5 day BWTM & TC Refresher + PTCD course has been designed to update the participants’ knowledge and skills to install and maintain portable traffic control devices and traffic management signs at worksites and events, as well as conduct on-site manual traffic control using a Stop-Slow bat.
Upon successful completion, students will be issued with a Main Roads Western Australia Accreditation card and certificate for their BWTM & TC, along with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following units:
- RIIWHS303 Position, set up and program portable traffic control devices
- RIIWHS206 Control traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs
Main Roads WA accreditation is valid for 3 years.

WTA also cater to companies or groups wanting to conduct a private training course, either at your suitable training venue or at our training premises.
Class times:
Duration: 1.5 days
Day 1 – 8.00am – 4:00pm
Day 2 – 8.00am – 12.00pm
Students are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled course start time, late attendees may be rejected from the course.

Prerequisites
All course participants must:
- Hold a MRWA Accreditation in BWTM & TC or interstate equivalent that is current, or an accreditation that expires no longer than 3 months before the course completion date.
- Provide either a Statement of Attainment or USI transcript for the following units:
- RIIWHS302E Implement traffic management plan or equivalent
- RIIWHS205E Control traffic with stop-slow bat or equivalent
- RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace or equivalent
- Hold a WorkSafe Construction Safety Awareness (Blue/White) Training Card
- Currently hold or have held a valid drivers license recognised by Department of Transport W.A.
- Have basic English language literacy and numeracy skills
- Provide a valid Unique student identifier (USI) [Create a USI Here]
- Demonstrate active engagement in the industry
MRWA require those who seek re-accreditation provide evidence of active engagement in the Traffic Management industry within the previous 12 months. The applicant must submit evidence of experience prior to sitting the refresher course.
If evidence cannot be provided, the applicant will be required to undertake the full course.
Documentary evidence of experience must include as a minimum:
- Details for a minimum of 3 worksites with a supervisor contact details that can be verified,
- Provide a completed and signed site specific risk assessment you have used on a worksite (SWMS, JSA or other hazard assessment)
To confirm eligibility for the MRWA Refresher course, you will be required to complete and submit the Pre-enrolment Evidence Form
Training day
Students are required to wear the appropriate safety clothing to conduct the practical component of the training course. This includes:
- Safety boots (steel caps)
- Long pants
- Hi-Vis shirt (if you do not have one WTA will lend you a Hi-Vis vest on the day)
- Safety gloves are provided by WTA
- Appropriate PPE for the weather conditions on the day of the course.
WTA requires that you bring the below to all traffic management courses:
- Photo ID
- Construction Safety Awareness (Blue / White) Card
- A valid Unique student identifier (USI)
Tea, Coffee and biscuits are available. There is a fridge available to keep your lunch cold and a microwave to heat it up. There are also multiple fast food stores on the premise.
